Getting to know Naghshe Jahan Square in Isfahan
Naghshe Jahan Square in Isfahan is a manifestation of the history and identity of Isfahan. Many tourists visit this beautiful square every year. Before the revolution, the name of this square was Shah Square, and after the revolution, its name was changed to Naghshe Jahan Square. Other names for this square throughout history have been Big Square, Main Square, New Square, Palace Square and Royal Square.

One of those who greatly contributed to the expansion of this square was Shah Abbas I. By moving the capital from Qazvin to Isfahan and building buildings in and around the square, he caused economic prosperity and the expansion of its market. During the reign of Shah Abbas II, the square was expanded and its name was changed from New Square to Naqsh-e-Jahan Square. Before the construction of Naqsh-e-Jahan, there was a square called Atiq in Isfahan, which was modeled after the construction of Naqsh-e-Jahan.

This square is 500 meters long and 160 meters wide. There are approximately 200 two-story chambers around the square. There are 4 valuable historical monuments on all four sides of this square. In the past, there were arches around the square that were built to protect the buildings. These arches have now become chambers.

Naqsh-e-Jahan Square is the central square of Isfahan. What makes this square different from other squares is its rectangular appearance, while squares are usually built with an oval appearance all over the world. Moscow's Red Square is one of the squares that is very extensive and famous, but it is interesting to know that Isfahan's Naqsh-e-Jahan Square is larger than Moscow's Red Square. This square is the second largest square in the world after Tiananmen Square in Beijing.

This square is known all over the world and was registered in the list of national monuments of Iran in 1313 and in Ordibehesht 1358, this square was also registered with UNESCO.

A look at the history of Naqsh-e Jahan Square
Before the Safavids came to power in Iran, there was a large garden where this square is now located. Military buildings from the Timurid era also existed in the middle part of the square, which is now called "Dar Kushk".

Later, the Ali Qapu Mansion was built in the western part of the square. During the Seljuk era and after, Nowruz celebrations and executions of convicts were held in this square. The grandeur of this square began when the Safavid king moved the capital from Qazvin to Isfahan. After the capital was moved, the area of this square became the location of the Shah's Palace and other government buildings.

The original structure of this square was founded when Shah Abbas decided to expand the city of Isfahan to the south and along the banks of the Zayandeh Rood. Famous architects such as Mohammad Reza and Ali Akbar Isfahani participated in the construction of this building. The structure of other Iranian squares such as Atiq Square in Isfahan, Amir Chakhmaq Square in Yazd, Shah Square in Qazvin, and Saheb Abad Square in Qazvin also influenced the architecture of this square.

To praise Shah Abbas, an inscription in the Thuluth script, known as the Ali Reza Abbasi inscription, is placed on the door of the Imam Mosque. Another inscription in the script of Mohammad Reza Emami, one of the prominent architects, is carved on the door of the Jame Mosque.

The construction of this square lasted from 1011 to 1025. Of course, the work of decorating the mosque and buildings only began in 1025 and continued until the reign of two of Shah Abbas's successors. Gradually, with the decline of the Safavid government and its last kings such as Shah Suleiman and Shah Sultan Hussein, the glory of Naqsh-e-Jahan was lost and its trees withered.

The process of destruction of this square continued until Reza Shah came to power. Due to the negligence of the Qajar kings, parts of the Naqqah Khaneh building were destroyed. Since the capital was moved from Isfahan to Tehran during this reign, this square lost its importance for the kings and was not given much attention.

With Reza Shah coming to power, efforts were made to reconstruct the buildings and chambers around Naqsh-e Jahan, and this square was registered in the list of national monuments of Iran. After this, prosperity returned to Naqsh-e Jahan. In the past, this square was used to hold royal celebrations, polo games, army parades, Friday bazaars, and various shows.
